How It Works: Selective Photothermolysis

Vascular lesion and vein removal at Blue utilizes the Cutera Xeo laser platform, which operates on the principle of selective photothermolysis. The laser emits light at a wavelength specifically absorbed by hemoglobin — the chromophore found in red blood cells. This targeted absorption generates heat within the vessel, which is then transferred to the vessel wall, causing photocoagulation and ultimately the destruction of the unwanted vein.

Surrounding tissue is largely spared because the laser energy is selectively absorbed by the hemoglobin chromophore rather than the skin itself, making this a precise and effective approach to vascular treatment.

Treatable Vein Types

Blue's vascular laser treatments are suitable for two primary categories of superficial veins:

• Reticular veins (feeder veins): Measuring 1–3mm in diameter and appearing blue-green in colour, these deeper feeding vessels often supply the smaller spider veins visible at the skin's surface.
• Telangiectasias / spider veins: Under 1mm in diameter and ranging in colour from pink to purple, these fine superficial vessels are among the most common vascular concerns treated with laser.

What Cannot Be Treated

Varicose veins — larger, bulging veins that typically result from significant venous insufficiency — are outside the scope of laser treatment at Blue. Clients presenting with varicose veins will be referred to an appropriate vascular specialist for assessment and management.

Important Considerations

While laser treatment effectively destroys existing unwanted vessels, it is important to understand that new veins may appear over time. This is due to underlying conditions — such as genetic predisposition, hormonal factors, or chronic venous pressure — that continue to drive the formation of new vascular lesions. Ongoing maintenance treatments may be recommended to manage new vessel development.
