What are Refyne & Defyne?
Don’t recreate, revive.
Aptly named as the ‘’Next Generation’’ of hyaluronic acid fillers, Galderma, the makers of Restylane®, have done it again; bringing us nothing but the best in aesthetic advancements.
Individualized and specially crafted for very specific areas of injection, Restylane® Refyne and Restylane® Defyne are indicated to last up to 12-15 months with optimal correction in moderate to severe facial folds, and deep wrinkles.
Often compared to warm honey, Restylane® Refyne’s smoother consistency makes the filler easier to manipulate, and less visible during facial expressions. Being a more flexible product, it can be used in shallower folds and more superficial wrinkles; while Restylane® Defyne is better suited for deeper folds, and has slightly less flexibility but provides better structural support.
More moldable than its Restylane-L®, and Restylane® Lyft counterparts, these mesh-net like fillers, move with you, and work great in areas that may already have fillers or definition from essential muscle movement.

How is the Restylane Refyne/Defyne Procedure Performed?
After a consultation and examination with one of our master injectors, the filler is administered using a fine-gauge needle. Refyne/Defyne both contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to ensure comfort during the procedure. Your provider will mold and shape the filler if needed and provide you with post care instructions to ensure your best result.
How Long Does a Restylane Refyne Treatment Take?
Treatment time with Restylane Refyne/Defyne depends upon the amount of filler needed and number of injections required to provide you with the desired results. If you require topical numbing in addition to the lidocaine contained in the filler treatment, this will add onto your treatment time. Most dermal filler treatments take approximately 20-25 minutes, including consultation.
Do Restylane Refyne/Defyne Injections Hurt?
Each syringe of Restylane Refyne/Defyne contains lidocaine. In addition to the lidocaine, some patients also opt for a topical numbing cream and/or ice to increase comfort during treatment. Patients commonly describe this procedure as comfortable, feeling only a small pinch or poke with the injections.
How does it work?
Using a cross-linking of HA particles, Refyne/Defyne’s gel-like solution gives patients a stronger foundational support without sacrificing flexibility or a natural appearance. When injected into wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth, the gel immediately fills the area for instant plumping and smoothing. This allows patients to see their results right away while the hyaluronic acid gets to work drawing in moisture and stimulating collagen and elastin production for long-term results.
How Long Do the Results of a Restylane Refyne/Defyne Treatment Last?
Every patient metabolizes injectables differently. However, in clinical studies, more than half of patients saw results up to 12 months after initial treatment, with optimal correction. Most patients will retreat within 6 months to maintain maximum result.
Am I a Candidate for Restylane Refyne/Defyne?
If you are over the age of 21, have moderate-to-severe marionette lines and/or nasolabial folds, and are in relatively good health, you are likely a good candidate for Restylane Refyne/Defyne. Some exceptions include patients who are allergic to lidocaine or other ingredients in the filler, patients who have had an allergic reaction to other injectable filler treatments, or patients who have severe anaphylaxis. Women who are pregnant or nursing should also not receive Refyne/Defyne or any other injectable anti-aging treatment.
What Side-Effects Can I Expect Following a Restylane Refyne Treatment?
Like with most dermal fillers, mild, short-term side-effects do occur. More common side effects include, mild itchiness, tenderness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Bumps and lumps can also develop but can usually be massaged within the first 7-10 days of treatment. Serious complications with Refyne and Defyne are rare and can be avoided by following the treatment protocols set by your provider.
No anti-inflammatory drugs (Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Vioxx, etc.), aspirin, high doses of Vitamin E, or Ginko Biloba one week prior to treatment. This will reduce the possible side effects of bruising and/or swelling in the treated area(s).
Consumption of alcoholic beverages prior to treatment can increase the chances of bruising and/or swelling.
You cannot be pregnant or breastfeeding to receive treatment.
If you have a history of oral herpes, you must pre-treat with an anti-viral three days before your scheduled visit.
Swelling, redness, and tenderness will occur after your treatment and usually resolves within 72 hours.
Cold compresses (a cloth dipped in cold water, wrung out, and applied to the injected area) may be used immediately after treatment to reduce swelling.
Avoid touching the treated area within 6 hours of treatment so you do not accidentally injure your skin. After that, the area can be gently washed with soap and water.
Until there is no redness or swelling, avoid exposure of the treated area to intense heat (sun lamp or sun bathing) or extreme cold weather.
If you have suffered previously from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another occurrence. Ask your treatment provider about medications that may minimize a recurrence.
Avoid taking aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, St. John’s wort, and high doses of Vitamin E supplements for one week after treatment. These agents may increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site.
Avoid aesthetic lasers, microdermabrasion, or IPL over areas with Restylane for a minimum of one week after treatment.
Follow up treatments should be scheduled usually every six months.
Consistent repeated treatments will produce best resolution of wrinkles.
